The former BHS store is being converted into the community hub – Y Storfa and will be home to Swansea office of Careers Wales and the main base of Citizens Advice Swansea Neath Port Talbot which will operate alongside a main public library and West Glamorgan Archive Service.
The new community hub promised to be a key regeneration project for Swansea city centre. It is planned to offer people convenient access to key services from across the council and other organisations and reinvigorate an existing building.
The community space is due to open in the second half of 2024. It is set to offer a range of public services and useful resources.
The main difficulty for this project was the limited information on the existing building and how to interface the required hoisting. This required a number of site visits and working with Kier’s temporary works department to develop a scheme which provided the largest hoist possible when tying to the original building structure.
The Maber MBC2000 goods hoist was chosen as this has full width loading from the side enabling site to load MEWPs and palletised materials for distribution to all floors of the project. It also was the largest hoist that could be squeezed in to the original loading bay, another of the site constraints that had to be overcome.
